For sanity purposes, I make sure that I get out of the house at LEAST once a week for some much needed "me time." Here are a few of my favorite mommy alone time activities:
1. Get a Mani and/or Pedi.
Although this is basically a given as most women love a fresh manicure and/or or pedicure as they make us all feel so pretty, it is definitely not an activity that should be overlooked! If you have the extra funds, there is never a time when a mani and/or pedi doesn't make you feel like a new person. They are always worth the cost in my book!
2. Book a Massage.
Same with this one! Moms have a lot of reasons to want/ need a massage; i.e. holding a baby on one side of their body for a large majority of time, chasing after toddlers without properly stretching before and/or after, tripping over Mega Bloks every 3 seconds, etc. Sometimes an hour-long massage is all you need to jump back into the ring of life and take down your next opponent (i.e. nap time).
3. Blogging (or whatever) at a coffee shop ALONE for 1 hour.
Ok, so I love to come up with new, creative ideas for posts and spend small doses of time in between naps and meals and diaper changes working on writing my ideas down in a way that they make sense to my readers; however, I daydream about getting just an hour where I get to work on this straight-through without interruptions; and, when I do, I am always sitting inside of a local coffee shop just typing away...ah, sounds so fulfilling, doesn't it?
4. Movie night with the girls.
On a monthly basis, a group of mom and non-mom friends and I make it a point to schedule a kid-free movie date and we rotate who is in charge of bringing treats/ snacks. For the month of February our little group went to see "Fifty Shades Darker" (sequel to "Fifty Shades of Grey") and we had candy, popcorn and cocktails. I kicked off my shoes and reclined in our local theater's amazing recliners and boom, just like that I was in heaven for 2 solid hours. It was amazing. Have to mentioned that I love my friends?
5. Solo trip to Target.
Another obvious choice. I LOVE making it to Saturday with a return or something that REQUIRES that I go to Target in order to deal with it. I especially love when I am able to sneak out of our house during nap time as the hubs is always willing to take over with the baby (especially if our toddler is asleep and she is the only one he has to deal with) and I am ensured a trip to Target 100% alone. How can you possibly go wrong spending time at a store that sells everything AND allows you to drink Starbucks while doing so? BONUS!
And for those times when I can't get out of the house, if there is a quiet that I don't spend folding and putting away laundry, you will catch me:
I have always loved reading; however, after I had baby 1, the times that I was actually given to sit down and read something of my own, personal interest, were, and still are, very limited. Although it has been difficult for me to read during the times that I would read right when baby 2 was born (i.e. in the middle of the night during night feedings), I have always made sure to have the book(s) that I am currently reading also downloaded on my "Nook" application on my iPhone so that I can see not only in the light, but also when it's dark. This ensures that if I have a free couple of minutes, I at least get to do a little bit of something that I love. If I happen to have 10 minutes or more for reading, that's when I like to locate and browse my "US Weekly" magazines (oops, guilty pleasure).
It has taken me a while to get on board with the whole adult coloring thing but I FINALLY have. After having received several adult coloring books, pencils, markers, etc. I finally got it all our a few nights ago and gave it a shot; and, it was actually quite relaxing. Unfortunately, I was unable to get truly excited about any of the pictures that I was coloring OR the pencils that I was using. That's when I ordered these (note: images are clickable):
Disney Princess pictures of my very own? Count me IN! Now I am hooked!
My husband and I have a little agreement that ensures that I get at LEAST 20-30 minutes of alone time on the weekends (weekdays are still hit-and-miss in terms of working out unfortunately) to utilize the basement by myself for work-out purposes. I love this time as I get to actually do something for me and my body, even though it is only for a short period of time right now. I know that over time it will extend but that our ladies are just a little needy right now, which is to be expected. During my 20-30 minutes of alone time I like to do the elliptical, complete a 20-minute Spin class in the privacy of my own home (thank-you youtube).
And, for the ONE time of year that I actually go out of of town and am away from my kiddos leaving the hubs on bedtime duty, I like to:
9. Take a short trip and/or stay somewhere, even if it is somewhere local.
I already have my trip planned for the year! With Spring Break just around the corner, I thought it was time to do what I did following the arrival of Baby 1 and plan it out so that I get a little "me time" and catch-up on a little sleep. How did I do this? I phoned a flipping' friend! And by friend, I mean relative; and by relative I mean SISTERS! I got in touch with both of my sisters who live in the same state but are approximately 3.5 hours west of where I am and asked them it I could pop over for about 24 hours to catch-up, have some fun and catch some zzz's. I am the oldest, so of course they couldn't WAIT to have me (hehe). We had such a blast when I went there for my first night away from baby 1; we shopped and went to a painting party where alcohol and snacks were served and just had a blast. I can't wait to see what they have in store for me this year!
No matter what I decide to do during my allotted mommy times, I know that I will enjoy myself; especially when I know that our girls are spending some much needed time with their daddy. What do you like to do when you get a free moment?
